COUGH Cough is a contraction of respiration followed by a rapid exhalation characterized by very rapid closure and subsequent reopening of the glottis. The cough is a reflection of the human body, a defense mechanism against irritation of the throat, trachea or bronchi and allows the expulsion of harmful substances.
